SSH without password

Summary:

  • Use PuttyGen.exe to generate rsa key
  • Copy the public key into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
  • Save the private key on desktop
  • Load private key into putty under SSH > Auth
  • Permissions:
    chmod 700 ~/.ssh
    chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

To setup the same between two Linux systems:

  • On source_host run: ssh-keygen -t rsa
  • copy id_rsa.pub to destination_host
  • copy contents of .pub to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
  • set 600 permissions on ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Other files:

  • ~/.ssh/known_hosts
